Creative Futures with Sam Glazer and Zoe Palmer, on Thames View and Riverside

NEighbourhood Commission 2014

Creative Futures is a charity working with freelance artists to deliver creative arts programmes.  They worked with musicians Sam Glazer & Zoe Palmer during April-September this year to create the project Tales from Thames Ward in Barking.  Sam and Zoe had previously worked in Thames View as part of Spitalfields Music’s team.

Sam and Zoe took music outside for their commission, playing at bus stops, outside shops and at local public spaces including the Sue Bramley Centre, Health Centre and Thames View Infants School.  During their project they discovered many things including 'The Song for Barking', pictured below, and also found themselves recording a new jingle for Barking and Dagenham's Talking Newspaper.  Towards the end of their commission they created an album of songs inspired by and made with local residents.  You can download this album for free here. They launched their album at an event in September at the Rivergate Centre with over 100 local residents.  Lyrics from some of the songs are also being used in a local public arts project coming soon to Creekmouth.

Thanks to staff and groups at the Rivergate Centre, Thames Lodge, Sue Bramley Centre, the Talking Newspaper, Thames View Infants and Junior School, as well as Cultural Connectors Khushnood Ahmed, Kim Jones and Denise and Wayne Saunders for their support for this commission.
